Mountains
Located 240km from Muscat, Jebel Shams is the highest mountain of the Al Hajar Mountain range. The ‘Mountain of the Sun’ as it is called in Arabic, rises to a heady 3009m above the sea level. Winter can bring snowfall and freezing temperatures while in summer the climate is much more cool and comfortable, compared to the wadis below.
Trekkers and campers find the climate perfect for exploring the diverse geography and capturing the rising and setting sun on camera. You will come across local people selling hand woven goods such as rugs and key rings, ideal for unique souvenirs.
Other than the weather, the major attraction of this mountain area is the spectacular canyon at Wadi Ghul, which is said to be the second biggest after the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
